CONSERVATION

We have a vision to restore the fauna and flora to the Eco Park as best as practical possible. Because the area is small, it is not conceivable to put back lions and elephants into the space. What is possible is to do as follows

- Remove all invasive and exotic plants.
- Replant endemic and indigenous plants.
- Encourage birdlife and bird breeding by no go areas
- Restore all small game that was natural here.

Our Permanent Residents

Because this takes a tremendous amount of resources we have entered into a co-management agreement with the Parks and Gardens department of the eThekwini Municipality. This made it possible to include the area referred to as the Van Riebeeck Park Conservancy into the Eco Park.

Our shared vision of creating a safe and natural area for residents and wildlife to co-exist has given us the perfect position to start from. Together we are constantly removing the lantana. syringe and chromolenea trees which overgrow the area. To date over 5000 trees have been removed and we have cleared vast tracts into grassland.

That will not be the end of the story as the grasslands used to be wetland and we now need to assimilate as much of this to wetland type vegetation.  This is done by re-establishing the right trees and plants. We look forward to soon seeing the wetland bird species returning to the eco park and enjoying there time here as much as we do.
